Position: Researcher- Energy Industry

Location: Pretoria

Closing date: 4 December 2024

Qualifications, skills and experience:
  • An Honours degree in economics, science or engineering from a recognized University with at least two years’ techno-economic analysis experience;
  • High quality writing and analytical skills with an ability to distil key messages from complex source data/reports;
  • Experience in economic modelling, energy utility, government, consulting, or economic analysis environment;
  • Experience in the collection, monitoring, and management of economic data;
  • Ability to work as part of a team, influencing decisions and reacting positively to challenges;
  • All international qualifications require an evaluation report / certificate issued by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).  
Key responsibilities:
  • Support the development and maintenance of financial and economic modelling for the energy sector (Techno-economics);
  • Assist in collecting data for purposes of economic modelling;
  • Conduct quantitative and qualitative research techniques in the energy sector;
  • Contribute to the compilation of technical reports and presentations for clients in the energy sector;
  • Support the energy industry research agenda (Energy Industry Support and Energy Transition Research).

Position: Doctoral Studentship- Earth Systems Science, Oceans and Climate

Location: Cape Town

Closing date: 3 December 2024

Requirements:
  • A Master’s degree in oceanography, chemistry, marine biology, atmospheric science, geophysical fluid dynamics, applied mathematics, physics, or engineering;
  • Must have:
    • Experience measuring dissolved oxygen would be advantageous;
    • Basic coding experience (e.g. Matlab / Python) towards data processing, analysis and visualisation will be advantageous;
    • A desire to participate in research cruises;
    • An understanding of basic statistics for the processing of large datasets will be advantageous;
    • Effective communication skills (oral, written and presentation);
  • Capable of independent work and able to work under pressure.
Focus Area:

Oxygen and Biogeochemical Dynamics Along the West African Margin: The West African ocean margin is a highly productive zone, critical for supporting key fisheries and marine diversity. It is also characterised by extensive oxygen-poor regions making it particularly susceptible to future environmental changes such as deoxygenation, which could have major socio-economic consequences for several West African countries

Position: Image Processing Researcher

Location: Pretoria

Qualifications, skills and experience:
  • A Bachelor’s degree in electronic/computer engineering, computer science or mathematics with at least one year experience (academic or work related) in video image processing and computer vision;  
  • Academic or work related experience in image analysis, segmentation, and registration techniques; 
  • Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in image processing, such as Python, Matlab, or C/C++; 
  • Experience/exposure in deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch; 
  • Familiarity with writing optimised code for GPUs, CPUs and heterogeneous processors; 
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team; 
  • Ability to present research findings to technical and non-technical audiences  
  • Problem-solving and solution-seeking orientation; 
  • Good communication, presentation and report writing skills, including the publication of research outputs (journals and conference papers.).
Key responsibilities:
  • Contribute to research, design, develop and evaluate video image processing algorithms; 
  • Contribute to solving problems related to image processing using a research-oriented approach; 
  • Contribute to experiment design and execution of both laboratory and external field environments; 
  • Conduct data analysis and modelling to develop algorithms; 
  • Publish papers in peer-reviewed journals, books or conference proceedings;  
  • Prepare project reports to disseminate information; 
  • Participate in the development and maintenance of software tools and libraries for image processing and computer vision applications; 
  • Keep up-to-date with the latest advancements in image processing, computer vision, machine learning, and related fields.

Position: Senior Image Processing Researcher

Location: Pretoria

Closing date: 02 December 2024

Qualifications, skills, and experience:
  • An Honours degree in electronic/computer engineering, computer science or mathematics with at least five years’ experience in video image processing and computer vision;
  • A Master’s degree will be an advantage;
  • Experience in image analysis, segmentation, and registration techniques;
  • Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in image processing, such as Python, Matlab, or C/C++;
  • Familiarity with writing optimised code for GPUs, CPUs and heterogeneous processors;
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team;
  • Ability to present research findings to technical and non-technical audiences;
  • Problem-solving and solution-seeking orientation;
  • Excellent communication, presentation and report writing skills, including the publication of research outputs (journals and conference papers.)
